About The Geography Department

Department of Geography is one of the most prominent departments of Barasat College. The department was established in 1996-97 with only General stream. Honours stream started in 2003-04. Currently it has six faculties who hold long experience in teaching. It creates teaching-learning environment in the direction of the overall upbringing of students.Laboratory of the Department of Geography is well equipped with all necessary equipment and infrastructure needed to carry out under graduate study as per the curriculum of West Bengal State University’s honours and general courses. The highly diversified map gallery with a number of 3D maps surely stimulates the inquisitiveness of the students to know more about the planet earth. A number of topographical maps, air photos and satellite imageries have been possessed by the department to cater to the need of the students better. Ten computers loaded with open-source GIS and Remote Sensing software provide hands on experience on GIS and Remote Sensing in the GIS –lab of the department.

Departmental Activities

The department also has a rocks and minerals gallery. Various instruments have been kept in the department such as, dumpy level, prismatic compass, theodolite and GPS to give students hands on experience for carrying out field surveys the fossils collected in various field programmes are stored here and that definitely help the students to unfurl the mystery of the planet in different time and space perspective. Out-station excursions are also conducted as per the curriculum of West Bengal State University. Departmental picnic is also organised.The department conducts annual seminar and brings out wall magazine regularly, where apart from Guest Speakers, students also get opportunity to present different subject relevant topics.
